PVC, like most plastics, bends well to create different shapes and angles which can be used for a variety of projects and purposes. Bending PVC does require a learning curve, and some trial and error to get the bend just right.
Due to its open interior, PVC pipe has to be temporarily filled to keep the wall of the pipe from kinking onto itself or folding over completely. The best technique to alleviate this issue is to fill the pipe with cat litter, or preferably sand, which will allow bending without crimping.
We’ve provided plans to build your own PVC bending jig, which will allow you to make angular bends in PVC pipe up to 90 degrees. Other methods, such as bending PVC pipe across a mold, often called a buck, to create curves, are not discussed here, but the application is similar.

To bend PVC pipe, download the free plans for our PVC Bending Jig, which can be constructed using 2x4s and plywood. This bending jig will allow a more fluid bend and control, and give you the desired angle you require. Additionally, to bend PVC pipe, you will need the following:

NOTE: Bending the pipe is easiest to do when you leave a specific amount of excess on each end. This will allow you to make your bend, and then cut the ends appropriate to your applications needs. |

Place an end cap over one end of the PVC pipe segment to be bent, or use duct tape to wrap and secure the end. |

Pour sand or cat litter into the opposite end, filling the entire PVC pipe with the filler. Shake to distribute and top off if necessary. Fill the entire pipe. |

Place an additional end cap over the remaining opened end of the PVC pipe segment, or wrap and secure open end with duct tape. |

Begin heating the PVC pipe with a heat gun or propane torch along the area to be bent. Apply heat until the area becomes pliable. |

Once the desired softness of the PVC pipe is achieved, place the softened area into the joint position on the PVC bending jig. |
Using the force of your hand, move the top part of the jig to the desired angle and hold in this position for one (1) minute or until cooled. Allow to cool completely before releasing. |
